Reshaping the Integrated-IR/DR Residency Application Process: Adapting to the Virtual Landscape in the 2023-2024 Cycle

Purpose: This exhibit aims to describe the impact of recent additions to the MyERAS application process, particularly in the context of virtual interviews for radiology residencies. Specifically, it addresses the introduction of signaling, gold/silver tokens, and the inclusion of geographic preferences. It offers historical context, supporting evidence, and advice for applicants and residency programs for the 2023-24 application cycle.

Methods/Materials: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ENT residency programs initiated program signaling in the 2020-21 cycle to gauge applicant interest. Multiple specialties expanded signaling following its success, with OBGYN programs introducing weighted signals in 2022-23. In the 2023-24 cycle, applicants can now specify geographic preferences, providing deeper insights for programs to consider when deciding how to allocate interviews.

Results: Beginning with the 2023-24 cycle, MyERAS will provide new sections for applicants to list impactful experiences, geographic preferences, and program signals. Applicants can express preferences for up to three of nine geographic regions and choose urban, suburban, or rural settings. In Diagnostic Radiology (DR) and Interventional Radiology (IR), weighted signals—gold for "highest" and silver for "very high" interest—offer nuanced assessments for programs to determine interview fit. DR and IR programs will combine their signals, compelling applicants interested in both specialties to carefully consider how they distribute their six gold and six silver tokens among preferred programs, an increase from the six regular tokens in the previous cycle.

Conclusions: Given the ongoing virtual nature of residency interviews, understanding the recent changes—signals, tokens, and geographic preferences—will empower applicants and programs to optimize interview offers and match rates effectively.
